August 25 Parent Meeting/Registration for Children's House. Tuesday evening, 7:00-8:30 Required attendance.

Aug 26, 27, 28 Three Orientation Days for new students in Children’s House.

August 31 Monday. Montessori School, all ages, begin.
School busing begins Sept. 10 when Pub. School opens.

September 7 LABOR DAY HOLIDAY

September 9 Wednesday 7 PM. Elementary Parent Meeting, Registration.

October 16 HOLIDAY. School and Daycare are closed Friday.
*Follows Public School Calendar.

November 12-13 Parent Conference Days. No school. Daycare is available by arrangement on annual contract.

November 26, 27 Thanksgiving Recess

December 24-Jan. 1 Winter Recess of 7 days. No school or daycare.
School resumes, Monday, Jan. 4.

January 18. Montessori is in session. There is no school busing Jan. 18 or 22.

February 15-19 Winter Break. No school and no daycare.

March 18,19 Parent Conference Days. No school. Daycare is available
by arrangement on annual contract.

April 5-9 Spring Break. No school and no daycare.

May 31 MEMORIAL DAY HOLIDAY
June 2 Last day for Montessori students unless there have been emergency school closings. School could run as as late as Friday, June 4. *Public school last day is Thursday, June 10.

These dates are based on the ISD 709 Calendar which determines our school bus service for students age 5 and older. The district or individual schools may change dates at any time. However, we do not usually change our calendar.
There is no PM bus service on these days: Sept 25, Oct. 15, Nov. 20, Dec. 18, Jan 29,
Feb. 26, March 19, April 16, & May 7.
We begin school 7 days earlier than public school this year; we take 4 days for parent conferences (November & March) and do not close on Monday, January 18 when Public Schools close.
We plan 172 days of school. We will make up as many as two snow emergency closings, so it's possible school could run through Friday, June 4, 2006.
We do not open on a day when Public Schools are closed for a snow emergency as announced on TV & radio.

(1)We begin school 7 days earlier than public school this year; Thus busing begins September 1o.

Thanks to a parent alerting me, I was able to catch the broadcast of the recent WPR program on Montessori education described above, last Wednesday, January 10, at 5 PM.

You can also listen to this hour-long show by going to the WPR site. It is free to listen to the broadcast online (in order to download the show to disk you must be a member of WPR--the cost is any donation--but just to listen it's free and you get it immediately).

This is an unusually informative discussion and the callers had very unique backgrounds (former Montessori students and parents) and contributed much to the topic.

Montessori Education Provides Better Outcomes

According to a study reported in the September 29th issue of Science, Montessori-educated children have better social and academic skills than children who attend traditional schools. You can read a summary of the article at Montessori-Science.org.

The findings are all positive enough, especially the social ones. I don't think the finding that 12-year-old Montessori students are not significantly different in math and reading (writing content, creativity, and sentence complexity are all significantly superior) than non-Montessori students holds true at all. Other research showed 18-year-olds (who had Montessori until 12 years) were higher in reading and significantly superior in math. The experimental group (and control groups) in both studies were from the tough low income neighborhoods in Milwaukee and date from the earliest years of the school when there were no older students to be role models. Our graduates are most frequently one or two years ahead of their public school counterparts in Duluth, and most often enter accelerated math clases in middle school.

Anne and Al have talked about having a website for the school for years now, but considered it a daunting task, I think. So I "volunteered" to help. I hope this site serves the school well. :)
